Kids
Reading to Kids is a national educational
program for character development and reading
improvement for underachievers in grades 1-4.
Kids Reading to Kids includes an innovative
teaching methodology and associated educator
training systems. Kids Reading to Kids
in its simplest form is beginning and early readers reading to younger
non-reading kids in a
structured Kids Reading to Kids environment
using Kids Reading to Kids developed
methodologies. Typical settings are 3rd or 4th graders
reading to first graders or kindergarteners, or
school-aged beginning readers reading to younger siblings at home.
The benefit of Kids Reading To Kids is
that reading improvement
often is dramatic and rapid, and it is accompanied
by positive character development and reader
confidence.
Kids
Reading To Kids is based upon several core
concepts:
 |
The power is in
the Kids and their emotional involvement
|
 |
Kids are the
messengers and motivators for other Kids
|
 |
Reading Kids
are participants, apprentices, teachers and role
models |
 |
Non-readers
want to emulate the beginning readers
|
 |
Learning is
"kid-centric" and "kid-led"
|
 |
Reading to
young non-readers prepares them for learning --
as young as age one. |
Why does it
work? Kids Reading to Kids creates a
non-threatening, non-judgmental environment for the
beginning reader where there is no teacher or peer
pressure. The reader is “looked up to” by the
younger child, regardless of the reader’s ability.
This quickly builds the reader’s confidence and
leads to greater reading enjoyment and accelerated
proficiency. In a classroom setting, Kids
Reading to Kids builds fluency quicker by
providing much more reading practice than would be
possible with a single reader reading aloud – and
the younger non-reader quickly builds new
vocabulary and enthusiasm for reading. Both members of the Kids Reading
to Kids reading team benefit -- the
beginning readers and the non-readers. Kids
Reading To Kids is especially powerful for
kids who are disadvantaged or underachievers and
come to the beginning reading environment with low
expectations or low confidence. We focus on creating
the surroundings for success.
