Kids
Reading To Kids® is a national program for
character development and reading improvement that
focuses on underachievers in grades 1-4. Based upon the
concept that “The Power is in
the Kids,” Kids Reading To Kids
in its simplest form is beginning and early readers reading to younger
non-readers in a
structured environment, e.g. 3rd or 4th graders
reading to first graders or kindergarteners, or
school-aged readers reading to young non-reader
siblings at home. The emotional involvement of the
beginning readers is an essential ingredient. Reading improvement often is
dramatic and rapid. Kids Reading To Kids
may be deployed in many settings:
 |
Classroom
Programs -- for example, a 3rd grade teacher and
a kindergarten teacher collaborating to set
aside 30 minutes several times a week to have
the the 3rd grade readers read to the
kindergarten class. In this setting, readers and
non-readers are paired one on one for best
benefit. |
 |
After-School
Programs -- where Kids Reading To Kids is a key
element. |
 |
Home
Programs -- where beginning and early readers
are encouraged to read to young siblings age one
and older. |
 |
Childcare
Programs -- where beginning and early readers
are encouraged to read to younger non-readers. |
 |
Library
Programs -- as part of structured reading
activities. |
